Olexiy Derzhavin

As long as I can remember, I have been drawing, painting, and experimenting with various creative media, often making a joyful mess in the process. Expressing my observations of the world around me has always been a necessity, deeply ingrained in my being. I believe this innate urge to create defines those who are meant to be artists.
I was born in Ukraine, a beautiful country with a rich history and culture. My passion for art led me to attend various art schools and courses, where I studied drawing and painting. By the end of high school, I had decided to pursue architecture. However, life had its own plans, and while my career path shifted, I never stopped dreaming and occasionally creating artworks.
Being and becoming an artist is an enduring journey that involves reflection, continuous learning, and a commitment to practical work and self-discipline. Formal education alone is never a guarantee of a successful art career. It often requires years of self-development, learning from more experienced masters, embracing mistakes, and steadily progressing to new levels of skill and expression. This journey has no final destination—true artists are rarely, if ever, fully satisfied with their work. That has been my experience as well.
After years of occasional painting, I decided to take art more seriously. I was fortunate to find Vladimir Ribatchok, a lifelong painter, a signature member of the Oil Painters of America, and a graduate of the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg. Under his mentorship, I spent nearly four years filling gaps in my artistic foundation, refining my perceptions, and evolving my style. This invaluable period gave me the confidence to commit to painting full-time.
I began approaching painting with discipline rather than relying solely on inspiration or whim. I dedicated more time to plein air studies and alla prima painting. However, traditional multilayered technique is the way I produce my larger studio works.
If my art resonates with you and you’re interested in acquiring one of my pieces, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
